Sikhism was founded by Guru Nanak and further consolidated by his nine successor Gurus. In the year 1699, Guru Gobind Singh completed the evolution of the Sikhs into Saint-Soldiers by bestowing them the Nectar (Amrit), a distinct identity, a particular uniform and a Code of Conduct. They are called the Khalsa (The Army of God). Their mission is to usher in 'The Kingdom of God' (Halemi Raj) on the planet earth.

The Sikhs are Monotheistic. They believe in the Fatherhood of God, the Motherhood of Earth and the Brotherhood of Mankind. The Sikhs do not believe in Asceticism, Monasticism, celibacy or torturing the body for seeking salvation of life. Contemplation of God's Name, a truthful householder's life, earning with the sweat of one's brow and sharing it with the needy, are the three pillars of Sikh life. This is the Guru's Way (Sahej Marg) which can ensure salvation in this very life.

In their daily life the Sikhs are very optimistic and extrovert. They act on the Guru's Word "Neither I frighten any body not am I afraid of any one." They are ordained to fight against injustice, inequity, suppression and oppression of all kinds, with peaceful means in the first instance and with force as a last resort. Here is a prayer of the Tenth Master that the Sikhs often sing:

"O lord ! Grant me the boon that I should never desist from righteous acts.
May I not be afraid of the enemy when I go to the battlefield.
May I resolutely ensure my victory.
And, I should always turn my mind to sing your praise.
When the time to die comes, may I die a valiant death."

The Sikhs always pray for the welfare of all His Creation. Their daily prayer ends with the following couplet:
"Says Nanak; May Thy Name, O God! Be ever in the ascendance.
And, in Thy Will, may peace and happiness come to one and all."
